O.K. Now that we kinda know who the presumptive nominees will be for both major parties, who do you see as being their choice for VP, and why?. For the purposes of this discussion, we are talking about McCain vs. Obama.

The VP choice for both the Dems and the GOP is nothing but speculation at this point, but here are some of those speculations for the Dems:
Pro: party unity; proven ability to win older voters, white women and blue-collar workers. Con: one of the most divisive politicians in the U.S. does control over the Clintons become an issue. Wesley Clark Pro: retired 4-star general lends instant foreign policy and national security credibility; as a Clinton endorser, could be useful towards party unity. Con: only won one state, OK, during his 2004 campaign for president. Sam Nunn Pro: one of the most respected foreign policy and national security experts on the national scene; serious, no-nonsense demeanor conveys gravitas and experience; puts GA's 15 electoral votes into play; as a conservative Southerner, could boost Obama's standing in that part of the country. Con: has been out of the political arena since 1996. Kathleen Sebelius Pro: popular two-term governor of KS, could reinforce Obama's image as someone who transcends partisan politics, as she tapped a former state GOP chairman as her running mate in 2006; and possibly strengthen his support among white women. Con: Clinton supporters might be upset that another women over her was chosen. Jim Webb Pro: would bolster foreign policy credentials, blunt McCain's edge with military families, and reach out to conservative white Southerners. Con: he's a wild card. Mike Easley Pro: could make Obama first Dem to carry NC since Pres. Carter; has his finger on the pulse of blue-collar America; a Clinton endorser, could help unify pary. Con: may not be seen as an agent of change. Chuck Hagel Pro: a Republican, would impress voters who are sick of partisan gridlock in D.C.; Iraq war critic and one-time ally of McCain, brings foreign policy credibility; has a business background and middle-American roots. Con: a Republican. Bill Richardson Pro: former ambassador to the UN, foreign policy credentials; Latino voters; could shift the swing state of NM from purple to blue. Con: didn't fire up many voters during his run for the Dem nomination. Ed Rendell Pro: could deliver PA; can reach blue-collar voters; a Clinton supporter, could help unify party; a Jewish running mate could help with retirement communities in FL. Con: may not be seen as an agent for change. John Edwards Pro: could help compensate for Obama's weakness with Southern whites and blue-collar workers; has been playing the presidential game for years. Con: two time failed run for the Dem nomination for president. shawn lopez Jupiter-Tequesta Chapter Jupiter, FL RD, Chev., LOH |
