Brothers,
This may sound like a crazy question. But in the 89 I became a Sr. DeMolay due to the fact I turned 21 years of age. I now see things about the Alumni not Sr. DeMolay. What does it mean to be an Alumni? Warren Bush PMC, Sr. DeMolay & Mason |

Brother Warren,
It isn't a crazy question. I'm an active DeMolay will be turning 21 in November. And I also would like to know what an Alumni is. Sounds like something great. Joshua Kock Master Councilor Aruba Chapter No.1 Order of DeMolay Oranjestad, Aruba |

Hi Brothers!
From my understanding we are all Sr. DeMolays when we reached age 21 and we only become alumni when we become members of an Alumni Chapter/Club or an Alumni Association. It really depends... on how your orientation is.. What if you were once a member of a University based DeMolay Club and you have already graduated.. then you are one of the alumni the said university DeMolay Club... What's really in a name?? Alumni or not.. the bottomline is we are all DeMolays bonded together for mutual improvement... whether active or those who have reached their majority... In DeMolay, BBZ |

I think everyone is missing the question.
To answer: What is an Alumni? A person who attended a school or was a member of an organization who now is no longer an active member because they graduated, reached a maximum age or similiar is considered Alumnus (singular form) of that organization. A lot of organization have an Alumni Club to keep in contact with previous members for the purpose of reunions or even better to advise the pupils or current members when needed. Colleges and Fraternities are big on their Alumni Clubs. Being part of the Alumni is another way of ensuring that a person is always part of the organization. Once a DeMolay; always a DeMolay. People grow tight bonds to fraternities that last a lifetime. Just last month I met someone who was a DeMolay thirty years ago. Even though seventeen years have passed since I opened a chapter of DeMolay, we were brothers in an instant. To be a Senior DeMolay means you are the Alumni of the Order. The meaning is the same. Not to be overly picky, and I say that because perhaps I am perhaps about to be, there is not such thing as "an Alumni". "An" implies singular.
The term is Latin and is PLURAL. The singular is Alumnus, as mentioned above. Someone is "an Alumnus" (male), or [not applicable to DeMolay] "an Alumna" (female). The male plural is Alumni (pronounced 'alumn-ee') and the female plural Alumnae ('alumn-I'). (Alumni is almost always mispronounced 'alumn-I' by non-Latin speaking English speakers.) And with respect to DeMolay, and the International DeMolay Alumni Association which is part of it, it is a member of the Association, which does NOT include ALL Senior DeMolays, but DOES include non-Senior DeMolay associate members, including Sweethearts, female Advisors, non-Senior DeMolay Master Masons, and anyone else who joins as a "supporter of DeMolay". Senior DeMolays are "Class 7" members of DeMolay International. Members of the Alumni Association are "Class 8" members of DeMolay International. Registered Adult Leaders (aka Advisors) are "Class 5" members of DI. So a Senior DeMolay, who is a registered Advisor, who is a member of the IDAA would be in all three Classes of membership at once. Some States/Jurisdictions have their own Alumni Associations, which require members to by in IDAA, and some localities have Alumni Chapters, Chartered by DI, whose goal is to support DeMolay through their activites. Yes, in the "generic" sense, all Senior DeMolays are alumni, however, in the technical sense, only members of the International DeMolay Alumni Association are the Alumni (Class 8 members). Dale Note: The DeMolay International Web Page should have information available on it, or links to another page, concerning the International DeMolay Alumni Association. I believe all Senior DeMolays get a one year membership gratis in IDAA on turning 21, but I could be wrong. That was the case at one time. Both annual membership and life membership are available. As a Life Member I don't keep up too much with the changes, if any. Look at the "Alumni Association" under the Community Tab at www.DeMolay.org. This message has been edited. Ok Dad Dale, I think you exceeded your goals of being overly picky, lol.
I belong to no Alumni associations; however, I am Alumni to DeMolay. I don't have to pay anyone for that right or be a member of their association. I earned that title by being a DeMolay. And no, not in the "generic" sense. In the technical sense, members of the IDAA were already Alumni, now they are "members" too. Fraternally Yours, Cash Stocker Fraternally Yours, Cash Stocker |

LoL, myself.
Well, it's not worth getting into a debate over, in any case. If we did someone might suggest that we both "get a life". However, if I read the Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of DeMolay International correctly, I don't recall finding the term "Alumni" being applied to anyone other that the IDAA membership. The term "Senior DeMolay" IS applied to all former Active DeMolays who reached Majority while in good standing with the Order. That is WHY there are separate classes of membership in DI for the two groups, even though one person may hold multiple classes of membership. I realize that the term "Alumni" is currently fashionable in some circles, while the term "Senior DeMolay" (implying "old and decrepit"?) may not enjoy current fashionable status. But the use of the terms in a sloppy manner, in other than the "generic" sense, is IMO an invitation to misunderstandings, which is never a good thing. Respectfully and Fraternally, Dale |

In Manila, Philippines, one DeMolay chapter refused to organize an Alumni Association, instead it organized a Senior DeMolay Association.

hmmm have not felt part of DeMolay proper since 1979 until I found this place. Yes was a senior , yes was a officer in my chapter many times over. Yet still was not aware of any program or institution that was out there for all us well old man types.

darkmecha,
From what jurisdiction you belong to, when you were in your active DeMolay years? The Philippine Islands? |
