Once, DeMolay is one of the best
organizations in Dumaguete. We went number one and on top back in 1970's. We handle most of the activities around and we became the only organization allowed to do activities during the MArtial Law. We did many things to the community. Yes, they gave back love and appreciation for DeMolay back in the 60's and 70's. However, this one single mistake our ancestors did - poeple's trust and appreciation to DeMolay evaporated in the 80's - vanished in the midst of darkness. Nowadays, many misinterpreted DeMolay as a suspended organization in Silliman University (Dumaguete City), an evil organization, etc. Most of these rumors were released by anti-masons and those who tried to join DeMolay but did not pass in the process of becoming a DeMolay. Hearsays and rumors, thus, few are interested and many are scared to join DeMolay. DeMolay is not a school or college-based organization, it is a community-based organization and we do exist even if we are not registered in a particular school. We have our own establishment where we can handle our meetings. We are not an evil organization, infact, we teach good moral virtues and ethics to our members and make them better men, future leaders, and citizens. DeMolay is the most unique organization aside from freemasonry since it is really different from other groups. Different? Yes, DeMolay is the best. It is an organization sponsored by the Freemasons. Freemasonry is the oldest and largest organization in the world. Examples of its members were Goerge Washington, Abrahan Lincoln, and a number of American Presidents, patriots, and heroes were Freemasons. In the Philippines - Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacion, emilio Aguinaldo, Manuel Quezon, and 90% of Filipino heroes and patriots were freemasons. Freemasons is a breed of great men and patriots that helped changed the world into a better place to live. Like Freemasonry we do things without putting our names on publications. Like freemasonry, we've been a breed of good men and law abiding citizens. Like freemasonry, we do our best until we reach greatness. DeMolay was once the most respected organization not just in Dumaguete but around the globe. Can we regain everything back? Should we? Must we? What will be the future of DeMolay if we base our group by the achievements in the past? How about making new achievements nowadays? We must do new things to regain public trust and appreciation once again. Brethren, to regain the legacy of Leon Kilat Chapter is not a goal - to make a new legacy aside from the achievements of Leon Kilat Chapter can be a better goal. We should learn from the mistakes in the past and make sure not to repeat them. We should watch our moves and actions since the mistake of one member can be misinterpreted and generalized as the mistake of the group. In the future, we will surrender the crown of youth to future DeMolays with pride and honor. That we became a part of it and that we made it in the next generation because we were open to change. |

Brother Louie,
What a long, inspiring writing you have! Yes, I still remember the luster and golden years of Leon Kilat Chapter during the 1970's. I still remember the "Conclaves" I attended in your place. Those are the good, old days! |

Though I am not an Expert in History:
I have not heard "Conclaves" held in Dumaguete City? What year is that? " Let us be true to our Solemn Obligations as DeMolay. For God. For. Country. And For DeMolay." |

Bretheren Ilad and Nirdla,
You are doing your homework, very well. Go down to the years 1970's and 1960's. Remember, there are "Conclaves" during those years (not necessarily National Conclaves). |

If you would allow a younger DeMolay to hear your side of the story....I would be gladly to hear from your own personal experiences about past Philippine Conclaves you participated in... Thanks. There are two kinds of Conclaves in the Philippines: National and Jurisdictional. National Conclaves only started in the 1980's.

"The Shield Talk" was an open ceremony that is no longer included in the Monitor of Ceremonies:
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* My brothers, I stand before you at this sacred DeMolay altar so that I may explain to you the symbolism of the beautiful insignia of our Order. The insignia was designed by the founder of our great Order, "Dad" Frank S. Land. He designed it as a pin and symbol that recognizes us as DeMolays. This emblem is to be worn only by DeMolays and their representatives. Every part of this insignia has a particular significance, and we as DeMolays should know them by heart. The CROWN is symbolic of the Crown of Youth and constantly reminds a DeMolay of his obligations and the seven precepts of his Order: Filial Love, Reverence for Sacred Things, Courtesy, Comradeship, Fidelity, Cleanness and Patriotism. The TEN PRECIOUS STONES of the crown honor our founder, Frank S. Land and the nine youths whose ties of friendship drew them together in the formation of the Order of DeMolay. The Red Rubies honor those who have passed away. Pearls represented those living members of the original nine DeMolays. When, as to every man, the final summons came for each one of this honored group, a red ruby took the place of a pearl. The HELMET is emblematic of chivalry which we as DeMolays display through our Courtesy and respect for womanhood and without which there can be no fineness of character. The CRESCENT is a sign of secrecy and constantly reminds DeMolays of their duty never to reveal the secrets of our Order or to betray the confidence of a friend. The five-armed WHITE CROSS symbolizes the purity of your intentions to always remember the motto of the Order, "No DeMolay shall fail as a citizen, as a leader and as a man." The CROSSED SWORDS denote justice, fortitude, and mercy. They symbolize the increasing warfare of DeMolays against arrogance, despotism, and intolerance. The STARS surrounding the crescent are symbolic of hope and should always remind us of those obligations and duties which one brother of the Order owes to another. Be sure to wear this insignia proudly, whether it be on a pin or a crest. Don't wear it any place where you would be ashamed to take your mother or your sister. Remember, in all humility, when you wear this emblem, you are representing and speaking for over three million other DeMolays scattered throughout the world, who cannot, for the moment, speak for themselves. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Obviously, you will learn more about the Order after you join. There are two answers to that question, the legal and the practical.
From a legal perspective you are a DeMolay immediately, and will be recorded as such as soon as you are reported to Supreme Council on a "Form 10". In a practical sense, it will really be as soon as you become fully acquainted with what being a DeMolay means, and become comfortable in it. Whatever study you have given us from the outside, won't fully prepare you for being "inside". Just like going to a new school, you will be getting used to the customs, and traditions of DeMolay for some period of time. How long ? That depends partly on you, and partly on how well you Chapter and your Brothers in your Chapter help you. The best thing you can do to help yourself move along quickly is to decide to learn your Obligations, by heart, as soon as possible. It is your Obligations that make you a DeMolay, and knowing them is every DeMolay's irrefutable proof of his DeMolay status. And learning them will help you get comfortable with what it means when you say "I am a DeMolay." Even if you are told you don't need to learn them, do it anyway, for yourself. You can loose your wallet and your membership cards, but what is between your ears, is yours forever. D. |
