My son recently joined Demolay. He went through a two part ceremoney that we were allowed to attend and was very moving. Afterwards, he has been going to meeting at the local group. Here's the question...what's next. He got intiated right so he is a member? But he talks about needing to learn some things. From reading these forums, there seems to be some ritual he needs to learn, is there a test? Then he is a member? Yes, I could ask the local chapter but he is the youngest member and doesn't want "mom" to come in (everybody else can drive) If someone could explain what happens after that ceremony and what we need to do as parents to encourage him that would be great. On another note, I have never been as impressed with a group of young men as I was that day at the ceremony.

Alisha,
I would be happy to speak with you about whats next for your son in DeMolay. I appreciate your not wanting to "Mom" him as he has yet to come to appreciate that. I am impressed with your initiative and creativity in coming here to the forums.
I could write all day as could others on whats next so I was hoping we could talk perhaps on the phone at your convience. I am currently out of the office 1-800-DeMolay, but will be back next week if you would like to contact me there, I would be happy to speak with you.

Welcome to the DeMolay Family!

Hi Mommy!

Yes, my new bro is a member of Order. He got the first degree, and it make him a member. But he can grow in degrees and be a officer, and for it, he need to study and apply in his life the teaches he will learn in DeMolay.

Your new "son" of millions now!,

All greetings!

Its the obligation he took at the altar that makes him a DeMolay. After that he is a DeMolay forever. Other things come along with that though to give more activity in the Chapter. The obligations are supposed to be memorized within a three month period to retain voting privlages. This is a way of helping him to remember to live by those oaths he took. He will most definately learn a lot from DeMolay and will andvance through the offices to give him leadership skills.

Most likely there will be things when the Chapter would love for you to assist such as dances, installation of officers, dinners and such. At that time he'll come asking for help.

When I first joined DeMolay, we kinda did it so that it was a Dad-Son thing, since my dad was a demolay when he was a kid. I kinda had that same 'leave mom out of it' mentality. Then I grew up a little and realized my mom's activity meant a lot to me. Some time there after she passed away unexpectedly. I wish I would have asked her to participate more before. None the less, I would say to him as a Brother, to create awesome memories with your parents, for one day you will be in my shoes and love to have good experiences to look back upon as an adult.

Moms are the greatest thing in the world next to God, and DeMolay will teach him to have a profound appreciation for parenthood. I hope that sometime in the near future you and he will witness the Flower Talk.

Welcome to the Family!

As our founder by Dad Land said

"... DeMolay works in so many ways and does so many good things to and for a young man that it actually has to be experienced to be fully understood, evaluated, and appreciated.
Literally speaking, the Order of DeMolay is a youth organization for young men whose purpose is the building of better citizens."

Alisha,

Don't worry about not wanting to 'Mom' him. Now that he is a member, you will be able to join the Mothers' Club if the Chapter has one. All or most of the Chapters usually have a Mothers' Club made up of all the members' mothers and some of the Advisors' wives. They usually attend most of the functions and help with the food, because, if there was not a Mothers' Club, there would not be any food or snacks at the dances or most importantly, the Installations.
As for the Ritual that he will have to learn, there is no test at all, he will receive the second (and final) Degree after which he will have to repeat that Oath from memory also. As for the Ritual, there is varying amounts of memory work and floorwork for each Office in the Chapter that he will need to learn as he climbs the ladder to become Master Councillor.
I hope this answers any questions you have.

For me, my biggest push was my mother. If it wasnt for her, I would not have stuck with DeMolay. I'm so happy to see other brothers have supporting parents. You have no idea how much we appreciate all that you parents do for us. So please, stick by your son. Stay interested, even if he acts like he doesnt want you there, he does.

For me the choice was a fairly easy one due to the fact that my dad is the Grand Treasurer for Demolay International and he was my big push to join about 6 years ago and he pushed me to learn whatever I was told to do. That is what really made me join Demolay.
